About Mondongo’s
Mondongo’s opened in 1976 around a single idea: get families sitting around a bowl of mondongo, the tripe-and-chorizo soup that anchors Antioquian home cooking. The founding family brought the recipe from Bolívar, a village southwest of Medellín. The original outgrew its first home and moved to this larger site on Carrera 70 in Laureles; a second branch followed on Calle 10 in El Poblado in March 1995. Nearly fifty years on, it is the most recognisable comida típica name in the city, with 11,462 Google reviews at 4.7/5.
What to Order at Mondongo’s
The mondongo is the entire reason the restaurant exists — tripe and chorizo soup, served with rice, plantain, arepa and avocado on the side. If you have never had it, this is where to try it. If tripe is not for you, the bandeja paisa is the equally traditional fallback: red beans, rice, ground beef, chicharrón, fried egg, plantain, chorizo and arepa. The menu runs to roughly thirteen traditional Colombian dishes. Lunch is the main meal in Antioquia and when the room is liveliest — do not plan anything strenuous afterwards.

Plan Your Visit to Medellín
Medellín is the capital of Antioquia and one of Colombia’s most-visited cities — known for its year-round spring weather (the "City of Eternal Spring"), modern Metro system, and walkable neighborhoods. El Poblado and Laureles are especially popular for restaurants, nightlife, and cafés. Pair restaurant visits with a Comuna 13 graffiti tour, a Guatapé day trip, or a coffee farm visit.
Getting Around Medellín
Medellín has the easiest public transit in Colombia — the Metro covers most tourist areas, and Metrocable cars reach the hilltop neighborhoods. Uber and inDriver are widely used and considered safe. For day trips beyond the city, book a guided tour or hire a private driver. Walking between restaurants in the main tourist neighbourhoods is generally safe day and night.
