Centro is the cheapest, most historic, and most contested place to base a Medellín trip. Plaza Botero, Museo de Antioquia, Catedral Metropolitana, and the Palacio de la Cultura are all within walking distance of any Centro hotel. Rooms here are 30–60% cheaper than equivalent stars in El Poblado. The trade-off: Centro empties out after sunset and isn’t the area you’ll want to wander after dark.
Who Should Stay in Centro
Centro suits travelers with two specific priorities: tight budgets, and a real interest in Medellín’s working civic core rather than its tourist-polished neighborhoods. Architecture students will love the historic facades along Carrera Junin. Photographers will love the morning light on Botero’s sculptures. Solo female travelers and first-time visitors typically choose Laureles or El Poblado instead — not because Centro is dangerous in daylight, but because it’s less comfortable as an evening base.
The good news: Centro is a 10–20 minute Uber or Metro ride from El Poblado and Laureles. You can easily stay in Laureles and visit Centro for half a day to see the Botero collection, then Uber back for dinner. Many travelers prefer this over basing in Centro itself.

What’s Walkable from Centro
From any Centro hotel you can walk to Plaza Botero (free, daylight only), Museo de Antioquia (small admission, houses Botero’s painting collection), Catedral Metropolitana (the largest brick church in South America), Plaza Cisneros and the Biblioteca EPM, and the Parque de las Luces. The walking distance covers maybe 15 city blocks of dense civic architecture.
Safety note: Stay alert in Centro — not paranoid, but eyes-up. Don’t flash phones in Plaza Botero, leave the gold watch at home, and don’t wander north of the Botero plaza after dark.
