A Guatapé day trip is the most popular thing to do outside Medellín — and one of the most rewarding. Two hours northeast of the city, you climb 740 zigzag steps up a 220-meter granite monolith for a 360° view of a man-made reservoir studded with green islands, then drop into the candy-colored town of Guatapé for lunch and a boat ride. Most full-day tours run 7 AM–6 PM.
The 740 Steps
El Peñól (also called Piedra del Peñol) is a single piece of granite that broke from the Earth’s crust around 70 million years ago. The zigzag staircase up its face was added in the 1950s. The climb takes 15–25 minutes depending on fitness; there’s a refreshment stand halfway up and another at the top. Bring water; the steps are in direct sun. From the summit you see the Peñol-Guatapé reservoir, a hydroelectric project that flooded the original town of El Peñol in the 1970s.

The Town and Its Zocálos
The town of Guatapé is famous for its zocálos — colorful relief panels that decorate the lower portion of every building. Each panel tells a story: the family’s profession, hometown, favorite animal, religious devotion. The most photogenic streets are around Plaza de los Zocálos, where the panels are densest and the colors brightest. Allow at least 90 minutes to walk and take photos.
The Reservoir and Boat Rides
Most tour packages include a 1–90-minute boat ride on the reservoir. Standard boats stop briefly at the ruins of Pablo Escobar’s lakehouse (La Manuela) — bombed in 1993 by a rival cartel and left in deliberate ruins. Premium tours add a swim stop or a longer cruise to private islands.
Tour Comparison
- Standard group tour — $35–55 USD. Hotel pickup, rock climb, lunch in town, short boat ride. The most popular option.
- Premium group tour — $70–100 USD. Adds longer boat, lakehouse stop, sometimes a llama farm or finca visit.
- Private tour — $200–400 USD for up to 4 people. Custom pacing, private driver, often a multilingual guide.
What to Bring
- Water (1–2 liters)
- Sunscreen and hat — the sun is strong at the rock’s summit
- Cash for snacks, souvenirs, and the rock entry fee (about 25,000 COP / $6 USD; sometimes included in tour cost)
- Light layers — boats can be windy
- Comfortable shoes — the steps are uneven
Tip: If you have time for an overnight, staying in Guatapé town instead of doing it as a day trip lets you climb the rock at sunrise (no crowds) and enjoy the town in the evening when the day-trippers leave.
