Adventure tours from Medellín — paragliding, rafting, ATV, hiking

Medellín’s mountain setting makes it one of South America’s best adventure-tourism bases. Paragliding launches start within 45 minutes of the city; whitewater rafting is 1–2 hours away; ATV trails run through the hills around San Felix and Las Palmas; and the urban hiking options include the Cerro de las Tres Cruces climb right above Centro.

Paragliding

The most-booked adventure activity. Tandem flights launch from San Felix (north of the city, 45 min by car) or Cerro de las Tres Cruces closer to Centro. Flights run 10–25 minutes depending on the package, $50–100 USD typical pricing, and include hotel pickup with most operators. The valley views from the launch are arguably as good as the flight itself.

Whitewater Rafting

The Río Verde and Río Samana run Class III–IV whitewater 1–2 hours from Medellín. Day trips ($80–150 USD) include hotel pickup, equipment, lunch, and 2–3 hours on the water. Best months are October–December and April–May when water levels peak. Operators provide all safety equipment; a swimsuit and waterproof shoes are the only things you bring.

ATV & Off-Road

ATV tours run through the hills around San Felix, Las Palmas, and Santa Elena. Half-day tours ($70–120 USD) include guide, equipment, and 2–3 hours of riding through coffee farms and pine forests. No experience needed for the standard tours; advanced tours go up to 4–5 hours with rougher terrain.

Hiking

Three main options. Cerro de las Tres Cruces is a 1-hour climb right above Centro for a 360° city view (free, popular with morning runners). Parque Arví at the top of the Metrocable has 80+ km of marked trails through the cloud forest (Metrocable round trip ~$1 USD). Cerro Quitasol in Bello is a 3–4 hour technical hike for serious hikers.
