Medellín’s “City of Eternal Spring” nickname comes from its highland location — 1,500 m (4,900 ft) above sea level, just 6 degrees north of the equator. The result is a subtropical highland climate where the temperature variation between January and July is less than 2°C, but the variation between morning and afternoon is more than 10°C. Pack layers, not seasons.
Year-Round Temperatures
Typical day: 15–18°C (59–64°F) at night, climbing to 23–28°C (73–82°F) by mid-afternoon. There’s no real “summer” or “winter” — every month feels similar. The city’s warmest months are slightly hotter in March and September; coolest are slightly cooler in November and December.
The Two Rainy Seasons
Medellín gets most of its rain in two distinct windows: April–May and September–November. “Rainy” usually means heavy afternoon showers lasting 1–2 hours, often clearing for sunset. Mornings during the rainy seasons are typically dry and excellent for tours. The two driest months are typically January and July.

Microclimates Worth Knowing
Medellín’s topography creates real microclimates within the metro area. Parque Arví (reachable by Metrocable) sits at 2,500 m and is consistently 5–10°C cooler than downtown — bring a sweater. The towns of Santa Elena and Las Palmas are similarly cool and often misty. Down in the valley floor near El Poblado and Laureles, it’s warmer and sunnier. Day trips to Guatapé are usually hotter than the city.
What to Pack
- Layers — a light long-sleeve for evenings, t-shirts for daytime
- Light rain jacket — even in dry months, brief afternoon showers happen
- Sunscreen and hat — sun is strong at altitude, even on cloudy days
- Comfortable walking shoes — Comuna 13 has stairs and steep streets
- One nicer outfit — Provenza restaurants skew dressier
Don’t pack: heavy jackets, beach gear (no beach in Medellín), umbrellas (a small fold-up jacket works better than fighting wind on rainy hills).
