Medellín’s “City of Eternal Spring” nickname is no marketing exaggeration — the city sits at 1,500 m elevation in a Colombian highland valley, and temperatures stay between 15–28°C (59–82°F) almost every day of the year. There are no real seasons. There are, however, two rainier periods, two festivals worth planning around, and meaningful price swings between peak and shoulder months.
The Sweet Spots: February–March and September–October
If you can pick your dates freely, target late February through early March or September through mid-October. Weather is ideal (sunny mornings, occasional brief afternoon showers in late September), tourist crowds are lighter than peak months, and hotel prices are typically 20–30% cheaper than peak. Tour operators have full availability without needing 3–5 days lead time.
Peak Tourist Season
December–January is Colombian high season — locals travel for holidays, hotels run 30–50% pricier, and Comuna 13 + Guatapé tours sell out 3–5 days ahead. June–August is the second peak, driven by North American summer travel. Both peak periods are still great times to visit — just book everything (hotels, tours, airport transfers) further in advance.
The Festival of Flowers — Worth Planning Around
The Feria de las Flores in early August is Medellín’s biggest annual event — ten days of parades, concerts, horse processions (cabalgata), and the spectacular Desfile de Silleteros (flower-bearer parade) on the closing weekend. Hotels along the parade route sell out 2 months ahead and rates triple. If you’re visiting specifically for the festival, book accommodations and tours by April. If you’re visiting for general tourism, avoid the first two weeks of August unless you want to be in the festival.
Rainy Seasons
Medellín has two rainier periods: April–May and September–November. “Rainy” here usually means heavy afternoon showers (1–2 hours), not all-day rain. Mornings are typically clear. Pack a light rain jacket regardless of when you visit. Outdoor tours like Comuna 13 and Guatapé still run, just with more umbrellas.
