Medellín’s centro is the cheapest place to sleep in the city and the most convenient for sightseeing by day. It covers two zones: the historic core around Plaza Botero and the Berrío metro, and the Plaza Mayor / San Juan stretch just west, near the convention centre, where you’ll find the more business-oriented hotels.
The honest caveat holds across both: most foreign visitors don’t base themselves downtown. The centre is loud and lively by day and empties out after dark, so a stay here is about price and location, not nightlife — take taxis at night rather than walk. Updated 2026.

Historic core vs Plaza Mayor
The Plaza Botero / Berrío side puts you among the museums, churches and street life — cheapest, grittiest, busiest. The Plaza Mayor / San Juan side is a notch calmer and more corporate, handy if you’re in town for an event at the convention centre. Either way, El Poblado or Laureles are 10–15 minutes away by metro when you want restaurants and nightlife.

Common questions
Is Medellín’s centro safe at night? By day it is busy and fine for sightseeing. After dark it empties and is best avoided on foot — use taxis or ride apps if you stay here.
Why stay downtown? Price and location. The centro has the cheapest hotels in the city and sits next to the historic sights, Plaza Mayor and the metro.
Where should first-time visitors stay instead? Most first-time visitors prefer El Poblado or Laureles for safety, nightlife and walkability, then visit the centre as a day trip.
