Medellín’s international airport, José María Córdova (MDE), is not in Medellín. It sits on a plateau above Rionegro, 30–45 minutes from El Poblado through the Túnel de Oriente, and the choice you make in the arrivals hall — official taxi, ride-hailing app, shared bus or a pre-booked transfer — is the first money decision of the trip. Here are the current prices, where to pay, and what actually happens at arrivals. Figures are the official 2026 tariffs and operator prices at our last check.

The official taxi
Airport taxis run on a regulated flat fare set each year by the Área Metropolitana. From 2 February 2026 it is 132,000 COP for a standard car, 134,100 COP for the electric fleet and 143,100 COP for the “lujo” service; the previous 2025 rate was 118,000. You buy a ticket at the official taxi desk in the arrivals hall (look for the “Taxi Aeropuerto” counter) and hand it to the dispatcher outside — no negotiation, no meter to argue over. Drivers must display the metropolitan-area compliance sticker. Assume cash: card acceptance at the desk is not guaranteed, and the ATMs are in the same hall. Uber, DiDi, inDrive and Cabify
They work, they are cheaper, and they sit in a legal grey area explained in our ride-hailing guide. Expect 80,000–110,000 COP to El Poblado including the tunnel toll, more with surge on evening arrivals. The airport specifically is where enforcement happens: Rionegro’s transit police have run operations citing dozens of informal drivers at the terminal, so your driver will typically ask you to walk up to the departures level or to a spot outside the terminal loop, and may ask you to sit in front. If that makes you uncomfortable after a long flight, take the official taxi — the difference is about 25,000–40,000 COP.
The Combuses shared bus
The white airport buses run around the clock between the terminal and three city stops: the San Diego bus terminal (south-east of downtown), the Hotel Nutibara in the center and Exposiciones metro station. The fare rose to 20,000 COP in January 2026; you can pay in cash, with a Cívica card, by QR or by card on most services. It is the right answer at 2 pm with a backpack and the wrong answer at 11 pm with a family: from any of the three stops you still need a taxi or the metro to reach El Poblado or Laureles.
Pre-booked private transfer
A driver with your name, tracking your flight, waiting at arrivals — booked and paid before you land. The two verified Viator listings serving El Poblado, Laureles, Centro, Belén, Envigado, Sabaneta and Itagüí: Private VIP Airport Transfer (from $29 per person, 4.6 ★ on 50+ reviews, reschedules free if your flight is late and you message two hours ahead) and Transfer Airport To and From Medellín (from $27, newer listing). Both are one-way, both offer an English-speaking driver for a surcharge, both refund in full up to 24 hours before. The driver messages you on WhatsApp when you land; connect to the airport Wi-Fi to reply.
What actually happens at arrivals
- Money: Global Exchange and Euroservicios counters and several ATMs sit in the arrivals hall. Exchange only what you need for the taxi; city ATMs give better rates.
- SIM cards: there is no SIM shop in the arrivals hall — the Claro kiosk is on the departures floor upstairs. Buy an eSIM before you fly or a SIM in the city; see SIM cards and eSIMs.
- The road: the Túnel de Oriente (opened 2019) cut the trip to about 20 minutes of tunnel-and-highway from the east side of the valley; the old Vía Las Palmas is the scenic alternative your driver may take if the tunnel is congested. Total door to door, El Poblado: 35–50 minutes.
- Tolls: the 23,900 COP tunnel toll is included in the official taxi fare and added by the apps.
Olaya Herrera (EOH): the airport inside the city
Domestic regional flights on smaller carriers use Enrique Olaya Herrera airport in Guayabal, ten minutes from Laureles and fifteen from El Poblado by taxi; there is no metro station at the terminal but Metroplús and city taxis serve it. If you are flying in from Bogotá or Cartagena on a major carrier you will almost always land at MDE, not here — check your ticket.
Going back to the airport
Leave El Poblado at least 2 h 30 min before an international departure (3 h at 5–7 pm on weekdays). Hotels can call a legal taxi at the same regulated fare; apps work fine for the outbound leg since pickup is at your door; the Combuses run from the same three stops. Book the return transfer when you book the arrival if you want the certainty.
