Jose Maria Cordova International Airport Rionegro
JMC airport — 30 km from the city, 30–50 minutes by road

José María Córdova International Airport (code: MDE, locally JMC) sits 30 km southeast of Medellín in the town of Rionegro, at a higher elevation than the city itself. The drive down through pine forests takes 30 minutes off-peak, 50+ minutes during rush hour. There’s also a small in-town airport (Olaya Herrera, EOH) for short regional flights, but international and most domestic flights use JMC.

Uber and inDriver — The Easiest Option

Both apps work normally in Medellín and at JMC. A standard Uber from JMC to El Poblado or Laureles runs $20–25 USD (around 80,000–100,000 COP). Drivers usually meet at the designated rideshare pickup zone outside the arrivals hall. The app handles payment, so you don’t need cash or to negotiate. Best for solo travelers, couples, or 2-bag trips.

Official Yellow Taxi

The official taxi stand is just outside arrivals — ask for the taxi oficial. Fixed rate from JMC to most central neighborhoods is around 80,000–100,000 COP ($20–25 USD). Cash only — most drivers don’t take cards. The drivers are licensed and the fixed-rate system protects you from negotiation issues.

Pre-Booked Private Transfer

Pre-book a private SUV or sedan with a driver waiting at arrivals (sign with your name). Cost: $40–60 USD for up to 4 people. Worth it for groups of 3+, late arrivals after 11 PM (when fewer Ubers are around), travelers with multiple bags, or first-time visitors who want a smooth landing. Most hotels can arrange this; tour operators offer it as an add-on.

Public Bus

The Combuses shuttle runs from JMC to the San Diego Mall station in central Medellín for around 18,000 COP ($4 USD). Departures every 30 minutes 5 AM–9 PM. Good if you’re traveling solo with one bag and not in a hurry; less practical with luggage or for late arrivals.

Tip: Have a few thousand pesos in cash for the airport-to-hotel ride, even if you plan to Uber. ATMs at JMC sometimes have lines or are out of cash; the official taxi gives you a guaranteed fall-back.

🏨 Where to Stay When You Arrive

Most travelers head straight from JMC to El Poblado or Laureles. Both are 30–50 minutes from the airport and central for tours and dining. Compare hotels:
