Christmas lights along the Medellín river during the Alumbrados
The Alumbrados: 25,000 light figures along the river from late November to mid-January

December is Medellín’s second peak after the Flower Festival, and for a different reason: the Alumbrados Navideños, the river-and-park light displays the city has staged since 1967, plus a month of free concerts, the Mitos y Leyendas parade and the paisa Christmas rituals — novenas, buñuelos, natilla, fireworks on the 7th. It is also the driest, sunniest stretch of the year and the most expensive for hotels. Here is what the most recent season looked like and how to plan the next.

The Alumbrados

The 2025–26 season was switched on Friday 28 November 2025 at 6 pm and ran 46 days to 12 January 2026. The main display — about 25,000 illuminated figures made by 150 artisans — ran along the Medellín river between the Guayaquil bridge and the EPM building at Parques del Río, with themed lighting in parks across all 16 comunas and the five corregimientos. Dates for the coming season are normally announced in October or November; expect the same late-November-to-mid-January pattern.

See them on foot from Parques del Río (Industriales or Exposiciones metro, then a 10-minute walk), any evening from about 6:30 pm; weeknights are far less crowded than weekends, and the first and last weeks are quieter than mid-December. Free.

The December calendar

  • Día de las Velitas, 7 December — candles on every doorstep and balcony from dusk; the unofficial start of Christmas, best seen in Laureles or Envigado streets rather than El Poblado high-rises.
  • Desfile de Mitos y Leyendas, 8 December — the city’s parade of folklore figures through the center (held Monday 8 December in 2025).
  • Novenas, 16–24 December — nine nights of prayers, carols and food in homes, offices and parks; if a local invites you, go.
  • Festival de Navidad — from the lights’ switch-on to early January, 120-plus free concerts and events across the city in the most recent season.
  • Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are family nights; restaurants and clubs are quiet or closed on the 24th and 31st and roaring on the 25th and 1st.

Weather, prices, practicalities

  • Weather: December opens the dry season — sunny mornings, 18–28 °C, occasional afternoon showers early in the month.
  • Prices: hotels peak from mid-December to about 10 January; Colombian holidaymakers fill Guatapé and the coast. Book six to eight weeks out.
  • Getting around: the metro runs shorter hours on 24 and 31 December and 1 January; taxis are scarce on those nights.
  • Eat the season: buñuelos and natilla from every bakery, hojuelas, and the Christmas sancocho. Our paisa food guide covers where.
